Plants That Heal in the Garden

Karen will guide us to different to plants in the Tate House herb garden and explain how some were used to heal.
This is a two part class. In the morning she will discuss tinctures, tea blends, infused oils, and poultices. In the afternoon there will be a demonstration on making ointment. Also stories and information will be shared on the traditional Native uses of plants and trees as medicines and natural cures.

Medicinal Native Plant Walk

On this walk we will find and discuss native plants traditionally used for medicine by the Wabanaki people. Karen will speak on some of the methods of processing leaves, flowers, barks and roots to maximize their medicinal potential. You will learn ethical ways of gathering native plants and trees to minimize the impact on the land. Also stories and information will be shared on traditional uses of plants and trees as medicines and natural cures. The practice of wild-crafting in itself can be a healing experience. Wear comfortable walking shoes. You may also want to bring water, a note pad and pen.

Karen Thurlow-Kimball is of Micmac descent and has studied traditional healing with Passamaquoddy Healer Fredda Paul. Karen has assisted Fredda in field walks and demonstrations through out Maine. She enjoys teaching others about the relationship they can have with the plants and how to receive their teachings. She encourages people to understand the plants they share this land with, and to integrate that relationship into their lives. Along with working with plants, Karen is self-employed as a web designer. She enjoys having a foot in both worlds, the modern/technical and the natural.
